The Platter guide is a comprehensive guide of South African Wineries and their wines. It is a great guide with up-to-date news and an excellent reference source about South African wine. It includes descriptions and ratings of some 6,000 current wines and has update background information on the +- 800 wine producers.

The wines are rated by a group of about 25 panel members and stars awarded from one to five stars. One panel member will rate the wines from a number of wineries and the tasting is a sighted tasting, ie with the labels in front of the taster.

It was started by John & Erica Platter, two free lance wine writers, 30 years ago.  The guide was sold to a publisher Andrew MacDowell some 10 years ago. Currently 50,000 copies are sold every year.

AWARDS IN 2006

Meerendal has scooped up three major wine awards in 2006.

The Meerendal Shiraz 2006  was awarded the SA Champion Trophy for the best SHIRAZ in South Africa at the SA National Young Wine Show in August.

In June Meerendal’s Merlot 2004 walked away with the Trophy for the best Merlot at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show with a score of 94/100. During October and November the same wine was served onboard SAA’s flights to all their first and premium class passengers.

Meerendal was the first recipient of the only National Certificate for PINOTAGE at the first Terroir Competition held in July for the 2004 vintage. Only twelve wines originating from eight different winegrowing areas in the Cape Wine lands received national certificates.
